Application of Biotechnology

Biotechnology is the study of the discipline that combines the knowledge of biology, agriculture, food science, and medicine. In the present generation biotechnology has found profound application as genetic engineering, cell and tissue culture. The main target of biotechnology is to modify any available organism for the advantage of human beings by engineering processes. Hence, Biotechnology finds a large scope of application in medicine, agriculture and development of species. The major fields where biotechnology is actively used are medicine, Pharmacogenomics, Pharmaceutical products, gene testing, gene therapy, agriculture and cloning.

It is also used in industries producing biodegradable plastics, vegetable oil, bio-fuels and organic products like milk and beer. Bioleaching is an important application of biotechnology in mining industry. It is also used in waste recycling plants where it finds active application in recycle, treat waste, clean up sites contaminated by industrial activities commonly known as bioremediation. But biotechnology also has some bad application too. It is wrongly used for production of biological weapons, clones and genetically modified impaired organisms.

The application of biotechnology is divided into bioinformatics for genomic projects, blue biotechnology for marine life, green for agricultural products, red for medicine and white for industrial processes such as enzymes and catalysts. The investments and economic output of all of these types of applied biotechnologies form what has been described as the bio-economy. The biotechnology has been applied for development and betterment of human life and to great extent it was successful and was able to create good lifestyle. But still biotechnology has negative aspects and it should be applied carefully so that no harm befalls the balance of Mother Nature.
