BIT MCA 2010

BIT MCA is an entrance examination for admission to MCA course of Birla Institute of Technology, Ranchi. BIT conducts an online entrance test for admission to MCA course every year. BIT being a highly reputed institute a large number of students apply for MCA entrance every year. Besides its Ranchi campus BIT also has extension centres at Allahabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Lalpur, and Noida. For all these campuses there is a common entrance test.

Birla Institute of Technology was established in 1955 and is a deemed university. It is a highly reputed university which provides a number of courses in Engineering, Computer Applications, Biotechnology, Applied Sciences, Management etc. BIT has a vast fully residential campus located at a picturesque location in Mesra, Ranchi. BIT provides the best of facilities, infratructure and faculty to all its students.
Eligibility criteria:

To apply for MCA course at BIT a candidate should have one of these degrees in graduation:

BCA, or
B.Sc. in Computer Science / Information Technology / Electronics, or
B.Sc. / B.A. with Mathematics or Statistics

A candidate having B.Sc./B.A. Honours should have got atleast 60% marks in their honours subject. For other degrees a candidate should have atleast 60% marks in aggregate of all subjects.

Final year candidates of the mentioned degrees can also apply.

Availability of Application forms for BIT MCA 2010:

The application form will directly be available from BIT, Mesra and its extension centres. The application form can also be obtained by sending a request for it to BIT, Mesra or any of the extension centres. Candidates can also apply online through BIT website where then can fill the details in the online form and send a printout to BIT Office in Ranchi along with a demand draft.

Date of online entrance Test: May 3rd week, 2010

Availability of application forms: March 3rd week-April 4th week, 2010

Last date for submitting completed application form: April end, 2010

Counselling: Mid June, 2010

Please note that the dates are only tentative and are not final. The post will be updated as soon as the dates are officially released.

Pattern of Examination:

There will be an online test of 2 hours consisting of 120 multiple choice questions. For every correct answer a candidate will get 4 marks and 1 mark will be deducted for an incorrect answer. Questions will be asked from the following sections:

Mathematics-70 questions
Analytical ability & Logical Reasoning-30 questions
Computer Awareness-20 questions

Syllabus:

Section A: Mathematics (70 questions – objective type)

• Algebra: Fundamental operations in Algebra, expansion, factorization, quadratic equations, indices, logarithms, arithmetic, geometric and harmonic progressions, binomial theorem, permutations and combinations, surds

• Set Theory: Sets and subsets, operations on sets, sequences, properties of integers, relations and functions
• Matrix Algebra: Elementary transformations, inverse of a matrix, rank, solution of simultaneous linear equations, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, quadratic forms
• Co-ordinate Geometry: Rectangular Cartesian co-ordinates, equations of a line, mid point, intersections etc., equations of a circle, distance formulae, pair of straight lines, parabola, ellipse and hyperbola, simple geometric transformations such as translation, rotation, scaling.
• Calculus: Limit of functions, continuous functions, differentiation of functions(s), tangents and normal, simple examples of maxima and minima, integration of function by parts, by substitution and by partial fraction, definite integral application to volumes and surfaces of frustums of a sphere, cone, cylinder, Taylor Series.
• Differential Equations: Differential equations of first order and their solutions, linear differential equations with constant coefficients, homogenous linear differential equations.
• Vectors: Position vector, additions and subtraction of vectors, scalar and vector products and their applications to simple geometrical problems and mechanics.
• Trigonometry: Simple identities, trigonometric equations, properties of triangles, solution of triangles, height and distance, inverse function
Probability and Statistics: Basic concepts of probability theory, averages, dependent and independent events, frequency distributions, and measures of dispersions, skewness and kurtosis, random variable and distribution functions, mathematical expectations, binomial, Poisson, normal distributions, curve fitting, and principle of least squares, correlation and regression
• Linear Programming: Formulation of simple linear programming problems, basic concepts of graphical and simplex methods, revised simplex method, transportation and assignment problems, duality and integer programming

Section B: Analytical Ability and Logical Reasoning: (30 questions – objective type)
Questions in this section will test logical reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and visio-spatial reasoning
Section C: Computer Awareness: (20 questions – objective type)
• Computer Basics :Organization of a computer, Central Processing Unit (CPU), Structure of instructions in CPU, input / output devices, computer memory, memory organization, back-up devices
• Data Representation: Representation of characters, integers, and fractions, binary and hexadecimal
representations, Binary Arithmetic: Addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, single arithmetic and two complement arithmetic, floating point representation of numbers, normalized floating point representation,Boolean algebra, truth tables, Venn diagrams
Computer Architecture: Block structure of computers, communication between processor and I / O devices, interrupts
• Computer Language: Assembly language and high-level language, Multiprogramming and time-sharing
operating systems, Computer Programming in C.
• Flow chart and Algorithms
Operating Systems: Evolution of operating systems, types of operating systems, functions of an operating system, modern operating systems
