Recognised as a country with a world-class educational system at affordable prices, Russia has emerged as an alternative for many Indian students, not so affluent. If you want to be a doctor, engineer or for that matter a pilot, you can consider Russia as an option. Russian degrees have global recognition and have topped WHO and UNESCO rankings. Out of the top100 universities in world ranking, about 30 position are occupied by the Russian medical universities. The WHO and UNESCO have rated the Moscow Medical Academy, the Russian State Medical University and the St. Peterburg State Medical University in second, third and tenth positions respectively in the world. Russia is also known for the various developments it has witnessed in the fields of aviation, aerospace, robotics, ship engineering, etc.


Also, according to experts, the standard of higher education in Russian universities is considered to be one of the most advanced and sophisticated in the world, as every educational institution is well equipped and the teaching methodology is well regulated and streamlined. The student-teacher ratio is approximately 7:1.

Russa, known for its courses in medicine, aerospace, aviation and engineering, offers courses with liberal admission criteria. The only thing which is required is Russian language, though many Russian institutions now offer courses in English language.

There is a preparatory course of one year for those opting for the Russian medium courses. In this course,, apart from Russian language, basic of the course that a student has opted for are taught. Only those students who clear this course are considered eligible to carry forward with the main course. Besides, those opting for the English medium courses are also taught Russian language so that they do not face any problems in their interaction with locals.

The medical institutions in Russia given the demand for the profession amongst Indian students, 30 positions are occupied by the country's medical universities out of the top 100 in world ranking. In total there are 48 medical universities in Russia which are listed in the directory of medical schools of the World Health Organisation, thus making the students eligible to appear for the screening test conducted by the National Board of Examinations on behalf of the MCI. After clearing the MCI screening test, a student can practice medicine in India.

Besides medicine, students explore opportunities in nuclear physics in Russia. Russia is offering great opportunities in basic sciences with state-of-the-art facilities. Tomsk Polytechnical University has got its own atomic reactor, which is unlike any of Indian universities.

The minimum eligibility criterion for admission into Russian Medical College is 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English as well as a minimum of 50 percent marks in aggregate. Students interested in seeking admission to Engineering Colleges, should have a minimum of 40 percent marks in 10+2. The MBBS course is available both in English and Russian medium. The duration of medical courses in English medium is six years and Russian medium is seven years.

Bachelor's course is for a period of four years in case of Engineering and five and half years in case of Master's degree. In the Engineering faculty, some of the branches of study are available in English, such as mechanical, electrical, chemical and computer engineering. All other specialties are available in Russian medium only.

Admission into PG courses is available at very affordable fees. The criteria of admission is a bachelor's degree from a recognised university. The medium of instruction here is in English and Russian. In case of English medium, students undergo one - year preparatory faculty in Russian.

Depending upon the university, place of study and course, the fee structure ranges between $1500-2,500 for Russian medium and $2,500-4,000 for English medium per year. The fee includes tuition, hostel accommodation and study material. Each student additionally needs about $ 800-1,000 for food and personal expenses per year.
