4 Sites That Give You A Free Updated Proxy List

anonymous_spySo you say you can’t get on the open seas of the Internet at school/work/home? You’re concerned about men in black suits watching what you see? What you need, then, is a proxy server.

You connect directly to the proxy server and it connects you to the rest of the Internet, using its IP address. Simple, effective, but more and more hard to come by.

As groups continue to try to regulate your Internet usage, proxy servers are being shut down. This has the effect of pushing people back into the main lanes of the highway called the Internet. It’s so much easier to track your sheep if they are all in the same field.

Courtesy of publicproxyservers.com

Let’s see what we can find for free proxy lists of proxy servers you can use.

Public Proxy Servers

publicproxyserversAround since 2002, PublicProxyServers is an independent, free service to allow you to find proxy servers for privacy and to circumvent browsing controls.

I think what makes this an excellent service is that they track the performance of each server on their free proxy list.

free proxy list

Poor performance, or slow download/upload speeds has been the biggest traditional complaint about using proxy servers. With Public Proxy Servers, this problem can be minimized.

On average, the proxies listed have response times of less than a second. Not good enough for you? Sort the list by access time! Want to appear that you’re coming from another country? Sort the list by country! You can sort the list by any of 7 criteria.

Probably my only complaint about this site is that they have plain text advertising that looks a lot like their regular content. Not much to complain about, I know.

Stay Invisible

stay_invisibleStay Invisible has more than just a free proxy list. It provides some tools to help you determine if your IP address is being effectively blocked.

According to Stay Invisible, there is a fault in Java that allows for your real IP address to be revealed, even if you are using a proxy. They also provide solutions for that problem.

free proxy list

You can find a traditional list of proxies here, with more information about each server, such as:

  • Originating Country
  • Anonymity Level
  • Form Submitting
  • URL Encoding
  • Referrer Hiding
  • Cookie Blocking
  • Script Blocking
  • SSL Access

These details may not seem that important to you, but it would be good for you to learn a bit more about each and what they could mean to you.

What I like best about Stay Invisible is that they have a list of other proxy lists! You can order that list by how many lists each list has added today, or in the last 7 days. This will help you find the freshest lists with more working proxies.

Centurian

proxy anonymous list newCenturian is another site that offers much more than a free proxy list. With an appealing design and easy to use layout, this is a learning resource as well.

Centurian provides articles on different proxy-related subjects, scripts related to proxy usage, and a forum.

The list can be sorted by the criteria of how new it is on the list, country, or script used to provide the proxy server. The speed of the proxy servers is shown graphically with a bar, that represents its score out of 10 for speed.

Now, I don’t know how that score is calculated or exactly what it means in terms of performance, however it is a nice, simple way to see if a particular proxy is useful.

proxy anonymous list new

Anonymity Checker

proxy anonymous list newYet another site that lists proxy servers, but has a little twist that I think could be quite useful. Their list of servers comes with a ‘whois’ link for each server. This should help you to determine just who is running the proxy server.

Is it a university, business, or government? Consider what each might have to gain for giving you ‘anonymity’. Nothing is free.

Things to Keep In Mind

Please keep in mind that just because you are using a proxy, does not mean you are guaranteed to be anonymous. Some proxy servers will track IP addresses that use them. Some offer no additional protection beyond being a proxy and your IP address can be accessed anyway.

Another thing to consider is this – how safe is a service that is being provided in order to ‘break the rules’? What if the server is being set up for a honey pot attack? That something is too sweet and easy to pass up, but then it becomes a trap.

So, my advice to you is to use these proxies with caution. Do some research and only use a proxy server when absolutely necessary.

How To Run Multiple Instances Of Windows Messanger

MSN logoA lot of people have different email accounts for family and work and often want to keep their instant messaging accounts separate as well. That is easy to achieve if you are using a browser based chat client like Google Talk; you can simply open a new browser window, or a different browser and login from two different accounts. However, this trick does not work if you are accustomed to using a desktop client like Windows Messenger.

There is a way however, using which you can open multiple Windows messangers on the same computer and login with different accounts. We can accomplish this by tweaking the Windows Registery settings of the software.

To refresh your memory, here’s what Windows Registery is all about:

The Windows Registry is a database that stores settings and options for Microsoft Windows oerating systems. It contains information and settings for hardware, operating system software, most non-operating system software, and per-user settings.

Here is a very useful link if you want to know more about Windows Registery.

Coming back to topic, following are the steps you need to follow in order to tweak the Windows registery for Windows Live Messanger and run multiple instances of it:

1. In the Vista search bar, type RegEdit and press enter. This will open the Registery Editor. From here, select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

Messenger-Step12. Select Software and then Microsoft from the menu.

Messenger-Step2

3. Within the Microsoft folder, select Windows Live and then Messanger. On the right you will see different registery settings for the Windows Messenger.

Messenger-Step3

4. We will now add a Windows registery in here. To do this, right click anywhere in the window and click New >> DWORD (32 – bit) Value.

Messenger-Step4

5. Type MultipleInstances as the new registery. Press Enter.

Messenger-Step5

6. Now right click the MultipleInstances registery you just created and choose Modify. In the pop-up, the value is currently set to 0, change that to 1.

Messenger-Step6

Thats it! This will allow you to run as many instances of Windows Messenger as you want. You can login to each with a different account. If you ever decide that you want to undo this whole process, all you need to do is go to the Windows registery you created and delete it.

Messenger-Step7

This technique can also be used with other software, however, one should be very careful while editing Windows Registry settings. Moreover, It is always a good idea to make a backup of your registry settings in case you mess something up. The simplest way to do that is by using the System Restore function in Windows. When you create a restore point, all your settings and customizations including changes to Windows Registry are backed up.

7 Great Sites To Get Free Romance eBooks For The Hopeless Romantic

romance ebook introWhile there is a wide array of literature on the net for Do-It-Yourself junkies and fantasy lovers alike, the resources available for mushy romantics seems, at first glance, extremely limited.

Most of the more populated sites I found did not have Romance sections at all, while every other topic under the sun, seemed to be well covered.

Thus, I did a little digging, and uncovered a few great resources of free romance ebooks for the starry-eyed dreamer in all of us.

eHarlequin

free romance ebooks

If it’s quality you’re looking for, eHarlequin is undoubtedly the way to go. Since eHarlequin actually publishes its own ebooks, you can be sure that every novel is thoroughly proofread and reader-approved.

Unfortunately, for this same reason, eHarlequin offers a very limited selection of free romance ebooks, a total of 17. The titles it does offer covers a variety of topics, from vampires in “Kiss Me Deadly,” to “Speed Dating” a Nascar driver.

1 romance ebooks

free romance ebooks downloads

1 Romance eBooks is another great resource for editor approved novels. Like eHarlequin, the selection is quality-assured albeit limited, but unlike eHarlequin, 1 romance ebooks has a sexual content rating that allows readers to determine the raciness of the books they are to read.

You can also read an excerpt of the novel, as well as view its tagged subjects.

Some of the free romance ebooks that are offered can also be downloaded in formats like LIT or EPUB, although the most common format seems to be PDF.

All Romance eBooks

If you don’t mind giving up a bit of your personal information to register at All Romance Ebooks, you can gain access to over a hundred and fifty published romance ebooks. Like 1 Romance Ebooks, All Romance eBooks has a sexy-o-meter that warns you when you’re wandering into risque territory (or goads you on, depending on the person).

Feedbooks

free romance ebooks downloads

If you’re more of a classic-love-story type of romantic, then you will appreciate the selection of public domain books that Feedbooks has to offer. With titles such as “Anna Karenina” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” it’s hard to go wrong.

Unfortunately, the books are only listed by title, so it will be hard to find a good book unless you either know exactly what you’re looking for, or are willing to read through all of the book descriptions to pick out one you find interesting.

Free Online Novels

If you don’t mind a spartan reading list, Free Online Novels has a long list of romance ebooks that is still updated regularly. The descriptions of the books stop at the author, for most books, and for others, whether it can be downloaded.

Free Ebooks

free romance ebooks downloads

Now, we begin to get into services that are a bit more community inclined. Although Free Ebooks requires an account to access its literature, an account allows you to download books in various formats, favorite books, and rate them on a 1-5 scale. When you are browsing books, you can arrange them by rating, to make sure you are reading the most well written and interesting stories.

Memo Ware

free romance ebooks downloads

Memo Ware is a website that is primarily aimed at providing ebooks that are accessible on PDA devices. It boasts a good sized database of over a hundred and fifty books that are ranked by readers on a five star scale. Unlike Free Ebooks, there is no registration required, and the details page of every novel includes information on the file type, and which platform the file is intended for (for example, Palm or PPC).

Although it seemed at first that free Romance Ebooks are a rare commodity on the web, hundreds of novels were found during the course of this article. Keep in mind, these are just the list of books that can be downloaded to be read offline or taken with you on your PDA. If you do not mind reading books via your browser, there are plenty more resources available to you, such as Public Bookshelf and Trinity Moon.

If your search for good romantic fiction takes you to the realm of user-written novels, be sure to take a look at Fiction Press, which is a good resource just because there are 63,000 stories. Although you will have to dig through the more grammar challenged submissions to find the really juicy stories, the amazing writing you will find is worth it.

Are there any must-sees that I missed? Do you have your own methods of channeling your inner mushy fluff-o-holic? Let loose in the comments!

4 Free WiFi Software Downloads To Take Advantage Of Wireless Networks

stealwificonnectionA lot of people have their own Wi-Fi network at home, yet not many of them are taking full advantage of the sort of cool things they can do with that network.

When I first hooked up my wireless router, my mind started going crazy coming up with awesome things I could do, such as running networked games between two wi-fi enabled desktop PCs and the wireless laptop, or offering my neighbors cheap Internet access.

In this article, I’m going to cover 4 free WiFi software downloads that will help you better exploit any Wi-Fi network you may come across, whether it’s at home or connected to a Wi-Fi hotspot anywhere in the world.

Make a Secure Connection With LucidLink

Before you get started on a Wi-Fi network – particularly a public Wi-Fi network – you need to be sure that you’re protected from any other system that’s also connected to that network. The first thing you want to do is take Karl’s friendly tech advice about things you should know when using a public hotspot.

Beyond that, there’s also an excellent free software application called LucidLink that detects the security settings of the network that you’re connecting to, how to configure your wi-fi settings to properly connect to the network and it also warns you if the network presents a security risk.

free wifi software downloads

The main screen of the LucidLink Client looks like any other standard Wi-Fi client that detects any available Wi-Fi network near you. If the network isn’t properly secured, LucidLink lets you know.

free wifi software downloads

Now, if you’re looking to “borrow” someone’s unsecured Wi-Fi network to check your email, this message would be expected. But if you’re connecting to your own home network and you get this error – it’s time to read Aibek’s article on how to secure your wi-fi network.

If you’re connecting to a public hotspot that requires a user login, like at a hotel or restaurant, you should not see a message like this. If you do – use the Internet cautiously (don’t start doing Internet banking). Select the network you want to connect to and click on “Properties” and you’ll learn what type of network (level of encryption) it is as well as the signal strength where you’re located.

free wifi software downloads

Obviously, avoid “Open” networks whenever possible – but if you must access an open hotspot, make sure to download and install a copy of HotSpot Shield!

Monitor The Wi-Fi Network With AirSnare

If you must run an open network at home, or if you’re connected to an open hotspot, at the very least you should run AirSnare – a Wi-Fi network monitoring application that immediately alerts you if there’s an “unfriendly” MAC address on the network, or if there are DHCP requests. This application can provide you with a bit of a warning if your Wi-Fi network is actively hijacked by a neighbor or any other unscrupulous character.

free wifi downloads

AirSnare is a great Wi-Fi application for those situations where you really need to connect to an open network, but you still want to keep an eye on the traffic. You can set it up to run in the background and have it alert you whenever anything strange is going on. The sensitivity of the software depends on how you configure what gets monitored and what doesn’t.

free wifi downloads

Personally, my favorite feature of this particular Wi-Fi app is that you can set it up to run as a service on your home PC, and when it detects a Wi-Fi intrusion you can configure it to fire off an alert email. Other cool features include using “AirHorn” to send a network message to the intruding IP, or capture and analyze packets using Ethereal (which comes with the install).

Sell Your Wi-Fi HotSpot Access To Neighbors

The flip side of completely locking down your Wi-Fi network is actually opening it up to your immediate neighbors and selling them discounted Internet access using ZoneRider. What better way to exploit your Wi-Fi network? ZoneRider isn’t only free – you get paid revenue for becoming a HotSpot zone in the ZoneRider network.

Keep in mind that to run this software and start selling Internet access through your Wi-Fi network, you may want to check with your ISP to be sure that doing so isn’t against the Terms and Conditions of your service agreement.

free wifi downloads

Registration is fast and easy – just don’t forget to use your PayPal email address so you can get paid!

free wifi downloads

The software displays all of the Wi-Fi users who are trying to connect to your network. Initially, ZoneRider automatically configures your network so that no one is allowed to connect until you either add them as a free user, or you create a paid account for them. Installing ZoneRider gives you instant control over who connects to your Wi-Fi network and who doesn’t.

free wifi hot spot software

In the accounts section of the ZoneRider website, you can configure “Premiums” for your various users by whatever monthly fees you prefer. For anyone living in a large apartment complex with plenty of bandwidth to share, this Wi-Fi application could turn into a sweet little money-maker.

Instantly Network With Local Wi-Fi Users With WiPeer

Finally, saving the best for last (as usual), I would like to present one of the most useful Wi-Fi apps I’ve ever used called WiPeer. WiPeer is a Wi-Fi based “server-less” peer-to-peer application which allows you to instantly perform certain networking tasks with other Wi-Fi users near you who also have the software installed.

The software presents users who have Wi-Fi enabled laptops and desktops with the ability to share files, play games or chat an ad-hoc peer-to-peer network without the need for any access point.

free wifi hot spot software

Setting up the network is a breeze. You can choose to use an existing Wi-Fi network to connect with other users, or you can create your own ad-hoc network. Once you create a network, other users who have WiPeer installed can then connect to it and communicate with your PC.

free wifi hot spot software

The software is your interface with other users, so you’re limited to what the application can do. The features include file sharing, a limited collection of four network games, and chat functionality. Find yourself sitting in the middle of a boring college lecture with your other friends who also have a Wi-Fi laptop? Fire up WiPeer and play chess or chat. Do you have to suffer through a long flight and your friends are scattered throughout the plane? Chat with them or swap music files during the flight with WiPeer!

Do you have any favorite applications that are tailored specifically for Wi-Fi networks? Share them in the comments section below!

How To Have a Blog You Don’t Have To Babysit

frustratedThere are countless opportunities on the Internet to capture a niche market where people are searching for information that you may be able to provide. If you do a good enough job, you could capture a tremendous audience, a huge following, and of course in the blogosphere all of that equals fantastic advertising revenue and sales conversions. There are usually far more great opportunities and ideas out there than you’ll have time for, so it’s important to understand how to have a blog that you don’t need to constantly struggle with.

What’s so difficult about building a successful blog? It’s the element that causes most aspiring bloggers to fail – the lack of time to post quality content and updates to the blog, and every professional blogger knows that if you don’t provide constant updates to your blog, people get bored and eventually stop returning to check out if you’ve published anything new. I’m just as guilty of it as the next blogger. So I’ve spent some time digging through what tools and options are available to bloggers who want to know how to have a blog that doesn’t take so much work and effort, but still keeps readers interested. In this article I’ll outline a few great widgets and resources that can help.

How to Have a Blog Auto-Update With Embedded RSS Feeds

The most common approach when someone wants to have a blog with automatically updated content is to embed the RSS feed of someone else’s website or blog onto your site sidebar. There are many different ways to accomplish this, such as using a Javascript or Flash widget that serves as an embedded feed reader right on your web page. My own personal choice is the Google AJAX Feed API.

Google1

I like this one because it’s so fast and simple to set up. You just choose the formatting, enter the keywords that you want feeds for, and let Google do the work. Typing "SEO" returned the feed link for SEO.com – good enough for me. Clicking on the "Generate Code" button generates the code that you can copy and paste into your blog sidebar. In my case, I use Wordpress for all of my blogs, so I just go into the Text/HTML widget for the sidebar and paste the code Google provided.

google2

After saving the changes, the widget gets embedded directly into the sidebar of the blog, essentially an embedded feed reader providing content from the SEO.com feed.

google3

Google is obviously the easiest, but if you want a bit more ability to customize the embedded feed, you’ll want to consider adding any one of the many RSS feed widgets out there. You can find a few of those resources in Aibek’s article on 80+ Tools For Successful Blogging.

Embedded Widgets With Cool Content

While your blog is most likely very much text based, in this Web 2.0 world there’s so much more that people are looking for. If you can make your blog a fun and exciting place to check out by providing a wide variety of many types of content, you’ll end up collecting more readers much more quickly. The type of content you want to offer is limited only by your own imagination.

For example, FlashCountdownTimer embeds a cool-looking countdown clock on your site, or another great example is HeyZap, which lets you embed games right on your own blog. Widgetbox has always been my favorite source for these kind of widgets that you can embed anywhere on your blog. A couple of my favorite widgets that I find adds tremendous functionality to any blog includes the Skype Online Status Widget, and the Flickr Slideshow Widget.

skype4

The Skype status widget displays your current online or offline Skype status to folks who visit your blog – this gives your readers the feel that the blog is a very direct connection to you, a live, breathing person.

flicker5

The Flickr Slideshow widget allows you to embed a customized photo slideshow of Flickr content tailored to the sort of content you have on your blog. It’s a very cool way to offer your readers imagery about the very topics they’re interested in! These are only a few examples – explore the world of widgets to determine what sort of dynamic content you want to embed on your blog. Just remember, it updates itself – meaning no work for you!

Embedded News Related to Your Content

Another source for some great content are news sources, which are mostly offered free for the taking. Most major news sites provide a widget or embed code so you can place news updates on your blog just like you can embed a feed. My favorite is, yet again, Google News – which offers a very simple wizard to embed news onto your own blog.

news6

You can tailor the news that gets displayed by using keywords targeted towards the content on your website. This is a valuable feature on any blog where people may be coming to you for the latest information and news on a topic – and if your blog is also the place where they can preview news headlines on the subject, they’re more likely to keep coming back. And once again – the news headlines are updated with no effort on your part.

Free Article Directories

One of the things that makes blogging so great is that you can get to know a person through their blog. For this reason, it’s not always the best option to use article directories that offer free content. On the other hand, if you have a very hot niche and simply don’t have time to write about it as often as you’d like, and you don’t have the resources to hire professional writers, then article directories are a very viable option.

It’s important to shoot for the best directories and the highest quality articles (not many article directory articles are high quality, but there are some!) I’ve used some of these free articles before, and two of my favorite directories, as well as the most popular, are EzineArticles and ArticlesBase.

ezine7

EzineArticles is, by far, the best of the best when it comes to free article directories. It’ll take some sifting through writing that’s pretty horrid at times, but before long you’ll hit a gem. Just make sure that before you use the article, you keep the writer’s byline and link to their website or blog. After all, you’re getting a free article, it’s the least you can do!

articlebase8

Articlesbase is the place I usually go for content when I can’t find anything at EzineArticles. Articlesbase is quickly rising as a prime spot for high quality free articles. Again, if you use any on your blog, just remember to give credit where credit is due, and you’ve got yourself a goldmine of free content for your blog.

In the end, the truly professional blog is one that’s constantly updated by professional, paid writers – that’s what attracts the most readers. But if you’re just starting out on your own and you just don’t have the time to create three or more blog updates a week – the resources in this article will let you update your blog more often without having to put in very much effort.

How to Make Your Blog Truly Interactive with Wibiya (Invites!)

social-bloggingMost blog authors don’t like to slow down and complicate their websites for any reason and most blog readers hate having to read a page that’s decorated like a Christmas tree with ads, headers and "share this" and "tweet me" buttons.

Sometimes though you encounter a tool that doesn’t complicate your life but just makes things easier and much clearer by replacing some site tools and plugins. I think the Wibiya bar is something like this. I know many of you might fear an extra popping up bar as an extra layer on your site, but I will show you how it’s really pretty unobtrusive.

The bar is a semi-transparent overlay on your site which is home to a number of application or buttons. You can choose which buttons you want to use. Most are for your readers to find or share contents of your site easier or connect your readers with each other or you as the author.

The following list of applications is available right now (from left to right in the image), and includes things you can embed such as games, Facebook, Twitter and more. You can see the Wibiya bar in action on this website. It appears right at the very bottom of your browser window.

Walyou.com - Wibya Bar Demo

The bar is under full development so expect a lot of new features in the coming weeks to months.

wibiya

  • Blog search – the favicon lets you choose between searching the blog or searching Google. The results page loads fast and looks pretty slick.
  • wibiya-search

  • Google translate the current page – It’s not the same as having a blog in multiple languages, but Google translate always manages to produce a readable page for your international readers.
  • Recent posts – Gives a nice list of your last articles. Basically a mini RSS-reader.
  • Random post – Sends your reader to a random page on your site. This and the recent posts button could make your readers stick around for a longer while.
  • Image Gallery (not in the screenshot) – shows a cool image gallery of a flickr album using Cooliris.
  • Subscribe to RSS – a way to subscribe to the RSS feed.
  • Share – share the post on social networks such as Facebook, Twitter or Del.icio.us. This could replace some of your other plugins.
  • Facebook Connect – when you install the Wibiya bar you automatically start a Facebook community for your site. People can join and they can chat in the group. You can also send them all a message.

  • Twitter console – On the right side you can display a Twitter account of your preference. Perhaps your personal account or that of your site. On the left side all the tweets about the page are shown, powered by Backtype. Users can tweet right from the console, with a shortened URL of the page.

  • If you want you can show every new visitor a small pop-up with a short welcome or about message.
  • Games (not in the screenshot) – this is one of the recent additions. You can embed games on your blog so that people can play games on your site by HeyZap.

These are the current applications. You can switch any on or off on your bar and you can choose a color and favicon that suits your blog. The Wibiya bar is in private beta right now so expect many more applications to appear. When you give feedback now you might even shape it the way you want.

The dashboard on the Wibiya site offers you some interesting statistics like how many people have subscribed to your RSS feed, how many tweets about your pages and such.

The app may be in private beta for some but not for MakeUseOf readers! Sign up here for the beta (the bar is totally free) with your name and the suffix MUO (like Joe Johnson MUO) and you will be approved within 24-48 hours. Let us know in the comments if you have added the bar to your site.
